Joselito B. Mariano
School Principal
To all our honored virtual guests from the Department of Education – Bataan,
Our Diocesan Schools of Bataan Directors,
To all the parents, teachers and administrative staff of St. Peter of Verona Academy Inc.,
Our dear graduates and completers. Everyone viewing this Virtual Ceremony.
A pleasant morning to you all.
The health and economic crisis that we have been experiencing since 2020 has changed many things that we ought to see as constant. We are in the midst of a dilemma where we want to progress and continue as a nation, but we also want to stay at home and be safe from harm. One that is immensely affected by this catastrophe is the education sector.
Many had doubted our ability to carry out an academic year that is primarily reliant on technology, the internet and a massive amount of paperwork. However, even in the face of great struggle, I believe, and I know that St. Peter of Verona Academy Inc. has persevered.
With the support of the Department of Education who authored our goals through the Most Essential Learning Competencies to the In-Service Trainings given for Flexible learning Modality of the Private Education Assistance Committee and many others, SPVAI; through our progressive and proficient faculty and staff, had successfully produce competent graduates that are now more than ready to face the real-world. Steadfast, resolute and determined we all kept together.
SPVAI had recently utilized Schoology as our Learning management system. Our LMS has given us the opportunity to organize our coursework and to meet our teachers and students’ needs towards teaching and learning.
Moreover, SPVAI had also conducted various developmental programs online to help shape and strengthen our students’ values and dedication to uphold our mission of a Quality Christian community in both social and professional context. One of these programs is our first Virtual Parenting Seminar-Workshop, Career Orientation and Guidance Week, and Alumni Career Testimonial Assembly.
In addition, our graduates have successfully showcased their learning and specialty in the alternative Work Immersion program where instead of a first-hand experience in a related work fitted for their career orientation, students themselves have worked to establish an academic-professional venture that solves authentic community problems.
For Humanities and Social Sciences, students have exhibited talents of communication, critical thinking, Fine Arts, Politics and Governance, Community Engagement and Media Information Literacy when they have conducted their seminar-symposium to different audiences from elementary to Grade 11.
Accountancy and Business Management students on the other hand, had established their month-long Business Simulation where they experienced real-world marketing, advertising, management and financial accounting and auditing.
And lastly, Our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics students had successfully built community-based design projects anchored in the UN Sustainable Development Goals that aim to invent, innovate and implement projects that have the potential to ease local problems through Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics.
Furthermore, even with the pandemic, the institution has been true to its goal in establishing an enlightened and progressing Research culture among its teachers and students through our first Research Boot Camp.
With all these, I the school head, with the ever and undying support of our superiors in DepEd and DSOB, the hard work of our teaching body, backbone support of the non-teaching staff, belief and trust of our dear and beloved parents and of course the excellence and efforts of the students, I can attest the St. Peter of Verona Academy Inc. although imperfect in some ways, had fruitfully coped and completed our Vision, Mission and Goals.
Our coming together, keeping together and working together, despite the obstacles that we may have faced had resulted to an array of potentials embedded within our graduates.
Your success is our priority hence, I wish you good luck on your next journey, may it be higher education or employment, do not ever be tired of getting the honor, and prosperity that you so richly deserve. Congratulations and God Bless.
The Life of Saint Peter of Verona
Also called Peter of Verona, an inquisitor and martyr. Peter was born at Verona, Italy, in 1205. Both of his parents were Catharists, a heresy that denied God created the material world. Even so, Peter was educated at a Catholic school and later at the University of Bologna. While in Bologna, Peter was accepted into the Dominican Order by St. Dominic. He developed into a great preacher, and was well known for his inspiring sermons in the Lombardy region. In addition, around the year 1234, he was appointed by Pope Gregory IX as inquisitor of Northern Italy, where many Catharists lived. Peter's preaching attracted large crowds, but as inquisitor he made many enemies.
In 1252, while returning from Como to Milan, he was murdered by a Catharist assassin at the age of forty-six. The following year, he was canonized by Pope Innocent IV. Although his parents were members of a heretical sect, St. Peter of Verona was strong in his Catholic Faith. However, his faithfulness to the Gospel message in his preaching as a Dominican, brought about much opposition, and eventually Peter paid with his life for preaching the truth. One of the hazards of preaching and living the Gospel is that we must be considered undesirable according to worldly values. With faith in the Father, and as his children, we are called to stand firm and never waver from the truth in the face of death. Canonized the year after his death by Pope Innocent IV, he was also named the patron saint of inquisitors. Since 1969, his cult has been locally confined. His feast day is April 29th.
